5:30pm - 7pm
Tuesday, September 16, 2008
2100 Bldg, 2100 24th Ave S., Seattle, WA Map
Free and open to the public

Join us as we hear from Adoption Specialist Ann Lawrence and Attorney Barbara Wechsler about the ins and outs of adoption, surrogacy and all the ways we can go about creating and supporting new gay families in our community!

Ann's clients are a great cross section of the Seattle population - straight, gay, lesbian, transgender, as well as single people from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds (including Seattle's own Dan Savage). She's worked with WACAP as a birthparent counselor, then became part of the staff of Open Adoption and Family Services. As part of their staff, Ann prepared home studies and supported families in their adoption process and at the same time, continued counseling birthparents. Today, Ann has a private practice focusing on preparing home studies for both domestic and international adoptions, and preparing post placement reports which accompany second-parent and foreign re-adoptions. She has a wealth of heartwarming stories to share with us.

For over 20 years Barbara Wechsler has been an attorney with expertise in family law and adoption. Her law practice has a strong emphasis in assisting GLBT clients in creating legally protected families through adoption, assisted reproduction and surrogacy. Barbara was one of the first attorneys in King County to obtain approval of a second-parent adoption in 1988 and later to obtain approval of a tri-parent adoption in 1998. Barbara and her partner have two teenage daughters adopted from Guatemala. Barbara is happy to share both her personal insights as well as her legal expertise to answer your questions as to the legal issues and procedures you'll face when starting your family.

Bring your questions. Bring your friends. Bring anyone interested in starting or supporting LGBT families (after all....it does take a village!)

State sees economics of gay marriage
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2008/07/15/state_sees_economics_of_gay_marriage/
The office of Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is touting a potential $111 million economic boost over the next three years as a practical reason for the state Legislature to overturn a 1913 law that prohibits marriages of out-of-state couples whose unions would not be recognized in their home states. The bill today is likely to have a vote in the state Senate.

United Nations: Defeat for Discrimination, Victory for Inclusion
http://hrw.org/english/docs/2008/07/23/global19435.htm
The decision by the United Nations Economic and Social Council granting consultative status to two groups that work on sexual orientation and gender identity is a victory in the ongoing struggle for inclusion at the UN. The two groups approved on July 21 and 22, 2008 are COC Netherlands and the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals of Spain (FELGTB), national organizations representing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the Netherlands and Spain.

Protests Mark HRC Gala
http://www.365gay.com/news/072808-hrc-gala/
(San Francisco, Calif.) The cracks that developed in LGBT solidarity over the past year were never more evident than on the weekend when transgender rights supporters picketed a gala in San Francisco hosted by the national Human Rights Campaign. A large number of demonstrators protested HRC’s support for a version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act which adds gays and lesbians to protected classes, but excludes transgendered people. More than a dozen LGBT groups immediately distanced themselves from the legislation, but not HRC. The bill passed the House and a Senate version is pending, but the HRC position has deeply divided LGBT activists.

Iraqi gays face murder, rape
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/07/24/gay.iraqis/index.html
The climate for gay men and lesbians in Iraq has gotten much worse since the removal of Saddam Hussein, as militias have targeted them in attacks and raped and killed an unknown number of victims, according to this article. "Gay men and lesbians in Iraq face a lot of risks right now, because homosexuality is sometimes interpreted by people in Iraq as being a Western import," said Scott Portman of human-rights group Heartland Alliance. "So they can sometimes be targeted by insurgent groups or militias, in part, because of animosity toward the West and, in part, because homosexuality is not well-accepted in Iraqi society."

Diversity Lesson 101: Intersexuality
http://queersunited.blogspot.com/2008/04/diversity-lesson-101-intersexuality_1907.html
Intersexuality is a very misunderstood minority with very little scientific research or cultural and educational awareness on this group of individuals who suffer enormously at the expense of society and the medical establishment. Intersexuality is when individuals are neither exclusively male or female. People who are born intersex may have differing degrees of being both male and female, internally, externally, or both.

Judge OKs adult trial for teen suspect
http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2008/jul/25/judge-oks-adult-trial-for-teen-suspect/
Relying on past court decisions, a judge ruled Thursday that trying a 14-year-old boy accused of murder in an adult court does not violate the constitution, swatting down legal arguments raised by the boy's attorney that it was cruel and unusual punishment to do so. Teenage defendant Brandon McInerney of Oxnard is charged with first-degree murder and a hate crime in connection with the Feb. 12 killing of classmate Larry King, 15, who sometimes wore makeup and told friends he was gay.

HRC pressures new Snickers ad off the air

Mars, Inc. has pulled its newest TV commercial for Snickers candy bars after communication with the Human Rights Campaign.

"Following conversations between the Human Rights Campaign and senior Mars representatives, the company has agreed to pull its most recent ad using stereotypes of gay men to sell its Snickers product line," HRC Workplace Director Daryl Herrschaft said in a written statement.

The ad depicts a man speed-walking in a manner reminiscent of stereotypes of gay men. The walker is then ridiculed by Mr. T as the former wrestler shoots Snickers bars from a gun, telling him to "be a man."

"These kinds of acts perpetuate the notion that the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community is a group of second-class citizens and that violence against GLBT people is not only acceptable, but humorous," Herrschaft said.

Poll: Acceptance of gays in military grows

Seventy-five percent say openly gay people should be allowed to serve

Public attitudes about gays in the military have shifted dramatically since President Bill Clinton unveiled what became his administration's "don't ask, don't tell" policy 15 years ago today.

Seventy-five percent of Americans in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll said gay people who are open about their sexual orientation should be allowed to serve in the U.S. military, up from 62 percent in early 2001 and 44 percent in 1993.

Majorities of Democrats, Republicans and independents alike now believe it is acceptable for openly gay people to serve in the U.S. armed forces. Shortly after he took office in 1993, Clinton faced strong resistance to his campaign pledge to lift the military's ban on allowing gay people to enlist. At that time, 67 percent of Republicans and 75 percent of conservatives opposed the idea. A majority of independents, 56 percent, and 45 percent of Democrats also opposed changing the policy.

Donors to Calif. marriage ban feel the heat

Southern California's LGBT community is mobilizing against San Diego's powerful -- and anti-gay -- hotel baron, Doug Manchester.

Manchester owns at least three hotels, San Diego's glamorous Manchester Grand Hyatt and Grand Del Mar hotels, and the Whitetail Club and Resort in McCall, Idaho.

According to Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate, Manchester donated $125,000 to Proposition 8, the Nov. 4 ballot measure that would amend the state Constitution to end same-sex marriage. Now, Manchester is facing a gay boycott -- organized by Karger -- against his hotels, as well as a protest Friday.

Manchester isn't the only Southern California businessman to donate big bucks to Proposition 8. Financier Howard Ahmanson, Jr. and developer Terry Caster and his family have donated $400,000 and $283,000, respectively, to end same-sex marriage in California, Karger said. William Bolthouse, of Bolthouse Farms health-drink fame, donated $100,000, and several churches have weighed in as well.

"I'm sick and tired of this," Karger says. "These people motivated out of fear and hate."

Senate votes to repeal HIV-positive travel ban

The Senate voted Wednesday to triple spending for a much-acclaimed program that has treated and protected millions in Africa and elsewhere from the scourges of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

The 80-16 vote committed the United States to spending up to $48 billion over the next five years for the most ambitious foreign public health program ever launched by the United States.

Language added to the Senate bill by Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Gordon Smith, R-Ore., would reverse a policy that has made it difficult for HIV-positive foreigners to visit or seek residency in the United States.

"For 20 years, the United States has barred HIV-positive travelers from entering the country even for one day," said Rachel B. Tiven, executive director of Immigration Equality. "Today the Senate said loud and clear that AIDS exceptionalism must come to an end."

Prudential to court LGBT market

Prudential will begin marketing its long-term care insurance plans to LGBTs in a partnership with the Human Rights Campaign, the insurance company announced Wednesday.

Sales representatives for Prudential's long-term care resources were trained to handle some of the unique financial challenges gay men and lesbians face.

A 2006 study by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that 90 percent of gay and lesbian seniors have no children to help them, while only 20 percent of heterosexual seniors are childless. Assets for married spouses are protected when one spouse is in a nursing home or long-term facility, but same-sex couples have no such protection. Surviving heterosexual widows and widowers can receive Social Security benefits of the deceased spouse. Federal and most states' tax laws also exclude same-sex couples from cost-cutting benefits that straight couples are privy to.

"Having choices and protecting retirement assets and personal savings from long term care costs should be important to everyone, however, it may be especially significant for the LGBT community," Prudential Vice President Eric Holtzman said in a statement.

House panel to hear "don't ask" testimony

The House Armed Services Committee's Military Personnel Subcommittee is scheduled to hold a hearing July 23 on the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, the Washington Blade reported.

It will be the first stand-alone hearing convened to evaluate U.S. military policy toward gays since "don't ask, don't tell" was signed into law in 1993, according to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network.

The law prohibits gays from being open about their sexual orientation while serving in the armed forces. About 12,600 service members have been expelled from the military as a result.

Report: LGBT Buying Power at $712 Billion

The LGBT economy is more powerful than ever.

A new analysis of the American LGBT community shows that their collective buying power in 2008 is $712 billion. That figure is an increase from 2007's estimate of $690 billion.

The analysis, conducted by market research firms Witeck-Combs Communications and Packaged Facts, follows standard methods of projecting purchasing power of other consumer groups, such as Hispanics and African Americans, Witeck-Combs said in a statement.

In fact, one could argue that the LGBT economic numbers are even more striking for the fact that they only cover self-identified LGBT adults 18 and over, while market studies of ethnic minorities include consumers of all ages. This analysis estimated that between 15 and 16 million adult Americans—6 to 7 percent of the total U.S. population—identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Growing LGBT economic clout came as no surprise to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), which advocates for LGBT businesses and consumers.

"Our missions is dedicated to education American business leaders on the far-reaching financial contributions made by LGBT households and business owners," said Justin Nelson, co-founder and president of NGLCC.

The Story Behind McDonald's & NGLCC

When the American Family Association took issue with McDonald's for its sponsorship of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, what was missing from the group's assault were the facts.

A company's decision to become a corporate partner doesn't reflect its entrance into the so-called "culture wars," as the conservative AFA suggested, but rather its commitment to diversity in the workplace and in its supplier relationships. [Related link: "McDonald's gay marriage flap," CNN video]

And the NGLCC is not on a mission of extreme social activism but rather focuses on economic advocacy and equality for the 1.4 million businesses owned by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons in the United States.

To correct the record, the NGLCC sent a letter July 8 to Dr. Donald Wildmon, the AFA's chairman, clarifying the NGLCC's mission and the importance of its efforts on behalf of small businesses.

"The main focus of the NGLCC is to connect major corporations with LGBT-owned businesses that want to ensure their diverse supply chain looks like the customer and employee bases they have, or the customer and employee bases they are trying to attract," wrote co-founders Justin Nelson, president, and Chance Mitchell, CEO.

Calif. hotelier boycotted over marriage initiative

Gay rights and union advocates have begun boycotting the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego after its owner, Doug Manchester, donated $125,000 to a ballot measure that would end same-sex marriage in California, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The hotelier's contribution to the proposed constitutional amendment on the Nov. 4 ballot struck a nerve among supporters of marriage equality.

Fred Karger, an organizer of the boycott, told the Union-Tribune, "This is someone who is giving an exorbitant amount of money to write discrimination into the Constitution for the very first time."

Broadway Powerhouse Jennifer Holliday To Perform with

Flying House Productions is thrilled to announce that Jennifer Holliday, a self-proclaimed “Broadway Baby,” will perform with Seattle Men’s Chorus for two very special holiday concerts on December 7th and 8th at Benaroya Hall. Enjoy Holliday for the Holidays–to witness her vocal power live in concert is truly an unforgettable experience.

Jennifer Holliday’s show-stopping, heart-wrenching performance of the torch ballad “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going” in the smash hit Broadway musical, Dreamgirls, made her a household name and introduced her big soulful voice to the world. It also garnered her both a Tony and Grammy Award. She has been crowned a “singer’s singer;” a truly electrifying performer who delivers her songs with deep passion and sincere emotion. Her soulful and throaty style touches hearts and leaves audiences moved with inspiration and spirits soaring. With her commanding voice, Miss Holliday has travelled from Broadway Theatres (Your Arms Are Too Short To Box With God, Dreamgirls) to Hollywood Recording Studios to sing with fellow legends (Barbra Streisand, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson). She has toured the nation (Sing Mahalia Sing, Harlem Suite, Black Nativity) sung with symphonies (Boston Pops Symphony, The National Symphony), and worked on several film and TV productions including several seasons on Ally McBeal as Lisa Knowles, the outspoken, quirky choir director at McBeal’s church

For the 2008 holiday season, the legendary Miss Holliday will join Seattle Men’s Chorus in their festive Holiday Concert, titled Fruitcake. The run includes seven Seattle performances from December 7-22 an additional concert in Everett on December 6th and in Tacoma on December 13th. Jennifer Holliday will perform select numbers with the Chorus during the first two Seattle concerts on December 7 and 8 only at 8:00 PM. Tickets are on sale now for subscribers. Individual tickets go on sale November 3, 2008.

Forum: Are There Angels in America?

In anticipation of their revival of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches (July 24th-August 9th) Absurd Reality Theatre will be presenting a forum titled: “Are There Angels in America?” to address the place of the gay community and those living with AIDS in contemporary American spirituality.

*The forum will be held at the Capitol Hill Library on July 10th from 5:30-7:30pm.

Tony Kushner's Angels in America: Millennium Approaches stands as a piece of art that challenges our nation to interact and discuss homosexuality as it relates to faith, religion in America, and the AIDS epidemic. It is a riveting illumination of an America lost to the destructive terror of AIDS, the collapse of morality during the Reagan years, and the disintegration of tolerance. Relationships dissolve, fantasy is made flesh, and a man is made a prophet in this exploration of politics, religion, and sex that is as poignant today as ever.

The forum will emphasize the struggles of men and women living with AIDS in our community, along with those just beginning to understand their own spiritual and sexual identities. Panel members include local religious leaders, authors and bloggers, and activists in the gay community. Refreshments will be served.
